Mathris (peppercorn’s cookies)

Its my first karva chauth and these Mathris are suppose to come from my moms house, but as we live in 2 different states she gave me the recipe to make this amazing little cookies. In My house mathris are considered auspicious and we celebrate special days like marriage festivals by distributing these mathris along with other sweets to family and friends. This is a family recipe coming down from my grandmother to my mom and my mom to me. These are deep fried cookies but they don’t absorb oil when cooking.

Ingredients:

2 cups Refined flour

1tsp Salt


½ tsp Carom seeds (ajwain)

5 tablespoons clarified butter (ghee)

1table spoon peppercorn’s


Refined vegetable oil to deep fry

Method:

Crush the pepper corns coarsely.


Take flour in a bowl, add salt, carom seeds, peppercorns and mix well.

Add five tablespoons of melted clarified butter and mix well.

Add sufficient cold water and bring together into a hard dough.

Cover and rest the dough for 20 minutes.


Divide the dough into twenty-four equal balls and flatten them slightly.

Prick with a fork.


Heat sufficient oil in a pan.

Slide in the mathris and deep-fry on medium heat till golden and crisp.


Drain and place on an absorbent paper.

Cool completely before store in airtight containers.
